Mr. President,

Allow me, like others,  to also congratulate the newly elected President of the Human Rights Council, the distinguished Ambassador of Thailand, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, a commendable diplomat and a fellow Asian with distinctive and honorable career, as well as the Ambassadors of Angola, Cuba, Norway and Slovakia as Vice-Presidents respectively. We wish them all the best in the year to come. May I also warmly welcome the new member of the Council.

Today marks the beginning of the Fifth Cycle of the Human Rights Council and the end of Indonesia’s current membership.

At the close of what has been an extremely constructive and insightful cycle, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Ambassador of Belgium, H.E. Mr. Alex van Meeuwen, for your worthy leadership in your role as President of the Council and for your unfailing ability to remain calm and impartial throughout the most heated of exchanges.

It has indeed been our honor to be a member of the Human Rights Council and the Vice President of the Council for the past year, and alongside so many distinguished counterparts, to be an active participant in the many important discussions concerning the protection and promotion of human rights worldwide.

It is my sincere hope that Indonesia has been able to contribute to the best of our ability and that future members will continue to build on the ever-strengthening foundations of the Human Rights Council.  Membership of the Council has indeed proven to be a unique learning process and we leave with renewed vigor to ensure that human rights issues remain a key priority on Indonesia’s agenda.

On behalf of my delegation I would also like to thank my distinguished colleagues, H.E Mr. Hisham Badr,   HE Mr. Andrej Logar, H.E Mr. Carlos Portales as well as the current Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Pedro Oyarce, for their support and friendship over the past year.  Together we have worked well as a team.

May I also express my gratitude to the Secretariat, namely Eric Testounet and his team, for their relentless commitment and dedication in facilitating the work of this Council and the Bureau.

In closing, I once again thank the President and all those involved in ensuring the work of the Council is carried out efficiently and effectively.  Indonesia continues to offer its unwavering support of the Human Rights Council and urges all current and future members to cooperate and contribute to this important body as it embarks on a very crucial endeavor, namely the review of its work and function in line with the GA resolution 60/251.  We will be in the running for re-election to the Council next year and we hope that our bid will be considered positively.

Thank you.
