Statement by H.E. Mr. Dian Triansyah Djani, Permanent Representative of Indonesia, at the 8th Session of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review, Consideration of the UPR Report of Armenia

May 06, 2010 Posted under Human Rights and Humanitarian Issues

Mr. President,

My delegation would like to thank the delegation of Armenia headed by H.E. Mr. Arman Kirakossian, Deputy Foreign Minister, for their national report submitted to this Council.

We note with interest the various measures taken by the Government of Armenia to ensure the protection and promotion of human rights of its people. They include, inter alia, amending the existing Constitution and Laws, enacting new legislation and establishing related institutions, and implementing wide-ranging human rights-based policies.

We commend the adoption of the 2004 – 2010 National Plan for the Improvement of the Situation of Women and Enhancement of their Role in Society. This effort, among others, has been followed by the submission of a Concept Paper on Gender Equality and by a Draft Law Ensuring Equal Rights and Equal Opportunities for Men and Women, both of which are in the process of elaboration.

Despite these positive measures, as also occurs in many other countries, the enduring strong patriarchal attitudes, discrimination and stereotyping of women’s role and responsibilities in the family and society is still in existence. In this regard, we would like to ask the delegation what practical measures the government has taken in order to address this issue ?

Moreover, gender-based violence, in particular domestic violence as well as violence against children, is one of the significant challenges faced by many governments. Accordingly, we would like to recommend that the Government of Armenia adopt legislation and measures to prevent violence against women and children, including through the strengthening of its monitoring mechanism.

In conclusion, Mr. President, we sincerely hope that the Government of Armenia will continue their efforts to further promote and protect human rights in their country.

Thank you.
