Mission Indonesia

STATEMENT BY THE INDONESIAN DELEGATION GENERAL DEBATE ON ITEM 10

March 21, 2012 Posted under Human Rights and Humanitarian Issues

Madam President,

Indonesia is fully aware of the immense challenges confronted by the Government and people of Yemen in dealing with their current political reform and transition.

My delegation welcomes the Yemeni Government’s strong commitment in promoting and protecting human rights and their continued engagement with the international human rights machinery and the global community in general.

In this regard, my delegation appreciates the positive measures undertaken by the Government in ensuring progress in this difficult period, including the adoption of an agreement toward the establishment of the National Accord Government and the early presidential elections on 21 February 2012. We look forward to further steps to be undertaken for the betterment of the Yemeni people.

Madam President,

Indonesia shares the enormous tasks ahead in Yemen to overcome the negative impacts of the crisis and to rebuild the nation based on the principles and values of good governance, rule of law and respect for human rights. These include achieving national reconciliation, enforcing transitional justice, and preventing  recurrence of human rights violations in the future.

Against this background, Indonesia attaches great importance to technical assistance and capacity building as a pro-active measure in order to assist Yemen in addressing these human rights challenges. My delegation therefore is of the view that the international community, with full consent of the Yemeni Government, provides necessary resources and technical assistance to strengthen the ongoing Government efforts in this regard.

Finally, Madam President, Indonesia stands ready to cooperate further with the Government and people of Yemen, in ensuring the smooth democratic transition in the country and wishes them the very best in their quest to promote and protect human rights as well as to bring stability and prosperity to the country.

I thank you.
