Madam President,

My delegation would like to thank H.E. Mr. Samir Dilou and the delegation of Tunisia for their comprehensive national report and continued engagement in the UPR process.

Indonesia welcomes continued transition process toward democracy in Tunisia and its new vision for the country`s future that will bring about hope and prosperity to its people. Tunisia has set an example to countries in the region on how to proceed with reform process peacefully and also continuously.

My delegation notes with appreciation various measures to implement the recommendations of its UPR first cycle in line with the ongoing reform in the country.

Madam President,

As fellow developing country, Indonesia commends the Tunisian Government for adopting the 2011 Jasmine Plan on national economic and social program which clearly integrates a strong human rights element in its three-pronged approach. The Plan not only  provides the conditions for sustained social and economic development in the medium term but also post-revolution crisis management and political reform, as well as measures to carry out the transition towards democracy in the country. My delegation therefore recommends that the Tunisian Government accelerate the implementation of the Plan in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

My delegation congratulates the Tunisian Government for enacting its law of 2010, amending article 319 of the Penal Code to remove the clause which provided a legal defence for the use of corporal punishment in child rearing. In this regard, Indonesia wishes to recommended that Tunisia enhance measures on public awareness raising and professional education to support the implementation of the law.

To conclude, Madam President, Indonesia would like to offer its best wishes to the Government and people of Tunisia in their future endeavours towards the promotion and protection of human rights at all levels.

Thank you.
