January 28, 2014 Posted under Human Rights and Humanitarian Issues

Mr. President,

My delegation welcomes the delegation of Cambodia, a fellow ASEAN country, headed by H.E. Mr. Mak Sambath, Vice Chair of the National Human Rights Committee, and thanks them for the presentation of their second cycle UPR report.

We appreciate for its efforts in promoting progressive realisation of its obligations in the area of human rights, including the ECOSOC rights. In particular, we appreciate Cambodia’s efforts in implementing Education Strategic Plan, promotion of equitable health rights for all, and poverty reduction.

While my delegation welcomes the overall report, we also believe that there are rooms for improvement of Cambodia’s efforts to further promote and protect human rights. In this regard, my delegation would like to offer the following recommendations:

  1. To continue strengthening its national institutional capacity in promoting and protecting human rights, including through completing the process of establishment of a national human rights institution in accordance with Paris Principles.
  2. To continue its efforts in promoting and protecting rights of the child, including finalizing and implementing the new draft of a national plan to eliminate the worst forms of child labor for the period of 2013-2018.

In conclusion Mr. President, my delegation wishes the People and Government of Cambodia all the best in their efforts to address the remaining human rights challenges in the country.

I thank you.
