Mission Indonesia

Statement by H.E. Dian Triansyah Djani, Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Indonesia at the 9th Session of the UPR Working Group - Review of Honduras

Mr. President,

My delegation would like to welcome the delegation of Honduras, headed by the Vice President of Honduras, H.E. Ms. Maria Antonieta de Bográn, and thank them for the informative report which she has just presented to us.

Indeed, we appreciate the active efforts made by the Government of Honduras to stabilize the country and undertake the necessary democratic reforms after the coup d’état of June 2009. The setting up of the Verification and Truth Commissions, in particular, is a courageous move on the part of the government and demonstrates its desire to foster reconciliation and national unity among the country’s various communities.

As a further token of the government’s commitment to its human rights obligations, we also welcome the role played by the National Human Rights Commission, established in 2000, as an important partner of the government and civil society. We therefore recommend that the government continue to ensure the independence and support of this mechanism, as well as of the above-mentioned Commissions, in order to fulfill their mandates.

Honduras has also given attention to vulnerable groups in recent years and has been active in developing the protection of the rights of women and children. Thus, we welcome the establishment of the Honduran Institute for Children and the Family (IHNFA), tasked with three major programmes related to family and children’s welfare, as well as social intervention and protection programmes.

However, as observed by the Committee on the Rights of the Child, domestic violence and child abuse still constitute a serious problem. While appreciating the ongoing measures involved,Indonesia nevertheless recommends that the Honduran Government step up its efforts to eradicate child abuse and domestic violence through the effective implementation of the national strategies.

Thank you, Mr. President.
