Statement by H.E. Mr. Desra Percaya, Charge d’Affaires/Deputy Permanent Representative of Indonesia at the 15th Session of the Human Rights Council, Item 7: Human Rights Situation in Palestine and other Occupied Arab Territories
September 27, 2010 Posted under Human Rights and Humanitarian Issues
Madame High Commissioner,
Indonesia aligns itself with statements made by Pakistan and Egypt on behalf of the OIC and the NAM respectively.
As today’s discussions and presentations have revealed, the Occupying Power’s ongoing policy of preventing free movement and adequate supplies of food, clean water, fuel and medical aid into the Gaza Strip, continues to spark the outrage of the international community.
This illegal blockade and Israel's counter-productive policy of collective punishment proved to be the impetus for the flotilla storming incident which, as we have heard today, has been deemed unlawful by the Council’s independent fact-finding mission.
In a broader context, the ongoing occupation of the Palestinian Territories in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, the occupied Syrian Golan and occupied East Jerusalem, and the systematic injustices and human rights violations which stem from it, are of continuing concern for the Indonesian Government.
We continue to be concerned that the basic human rights of the Palestinian people, including the right to safe and sanitary living conditions, the right to education and the right to development are being consistently denied by the Occupying Power.
We particularly deplore the Israel’s deliberate and continued policies regarding the construction of settlement, the separation walls and the inhuman network of checkpoints. These have made the prospects for lost-lasting solutions even more remote.
It is Indonesia’s genuine hope that in efforts toward a just, lasting and comprehensive peace agreement, all parties involved in the peace negotiations will continue to work in good faith.
We therefore urge the Government of Israel to show courageous leadership and particularly, freeze all illegal construction in the Occupied West Bank and Occupied East Jerusalem and withdraw to the 1967 borders.
