Indonesia proposes ASEAN visa
July 14, 2011
Jakarta (The Jakarta Post/ANN) - The Indonesian government has proposed implementing a unified ASEAN travel visa to ease travel within the region for citizens of ASEAN member states.
"When the ASEAN visa is implemented, one visa will be needed to visit the region, which is good for tourism," Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said on Thursday.
Marty added that there were some challenges to the idea, which would be discussed at the 44th ASEAN foreign minister meeting in Bali, held on July 16 to 23.
"We have to consider the laws and rules of each country. Besides, we are still learning what effects may come from the ASEAN visa, as far as safety and politics," he said.
However, Marty did not provide any timetable for the ASEAN visa plan.
