Appointed
on 4 September 2000, His Excellency Ambassador Nugroho Wisnumurti is the
Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations
and Other International Organizations in Geneva. Before assuming his post
in Geneva, Ambassador Wisnumurti was the Director-General for Political
Affairs, Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (from
1997 to 2000). Appointed in January 1999, Ambassador Wisnumurti is presently
a member of the UN Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters.
A seasoned
diplomat, his vast experience include among others: Ambassador/Permanent
Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations, New
York, and concurrently Ambassador to Jamaica, the Bahamas, Guatemala and
Nicaragua (1992-1997); Representative of Indonesia to the UN Security Council
(1995-1996) including serving as the Council's President in August 1995
and November 1996; Chairman of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned
Movement (1992-1995); Member of the "UN Group of Experts on Defensive Security"
and Member of the "Group of Experts of the Non-Aligned Movement South Centre
on UN's Role in Promoting International Cooperation" (1991-1992); Negotiator/Chief
Negotiator for various agreements on maritime demilitation with neighbouring
countries (1977-1989); Deputy Head of the Indonesian Delegation to the
Conference on Disarmament, Geneva (1982-1986); Member and Secretary of
the Indonesian Delegation to the Third UN Conference on the Law of the
Sea (1974-1982); and Member of the Indonesian Delegation to the UN Seabed
Committee (1971-1974).
Ambassador
Wisnumurti joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1968. His previous
posts include: Third Secretary and later promoted to Second Secretary at
the Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the UN, New York (1972-1974), Deputy
Director, Legal and Treaty Affairs, Department of Foreign Affairs (1977-1982),
Minister Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Indonesia, Geneva (1982-1986);
Director of Legal and Treaties Affairs, Department of Foreign Affairs (1987-1989);
and Ambassador/Deputy Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the UN,
New York (1989-1992).
Ambassador
Nugroho Wisnumurti graduated from Columbia University School of Law, New
York, in 1973 and from University of Indonesia, Faculty of Law in 1965.
In 1988, he graduated from the 21st Regular Course of Lemhanas (Institute
for National Resilience), Jakarta, with honour (Seroja Award).
A prolific
author, his articles published in national and international periodicals
on international affairs and international law including the law of the
sea and disarmament.
Ambassador
Nugroho Wisnumurti was born on 23 March 1940 in Surakarta (Central Java,
Indonesia) and is married to Mrs. Nan Irama Wisnumurti. They have one daughter.
